The fourth Extreme Hangout Local event was held in Kigali, Rwanda in August as part of EXTREME’s ambitious goal to deliver 50 impact events in 50 locations in the next 5 years.
Hosted by Leonard IYAMUREMYE, an environmental and climate change activist who served as regional coordinator at COY16 Glasgow for the East African region, Logistic member of COY17, Youth4Nature Global ambassador, Country Representative of African Youth for Development Commission (AYDEC) for Rwanda, and an Ambassador of IUCN-PAPACO.
The event focused on the theme of "Climate Change Crisis and Opportunities for Youth: Raising Awareness" and presented a line-up of inspiring speakers leading the movement. Discussions explored ways in which young individuals could seize opportunities related to climate change on local, regional and global levels, as well as methods for engaging the youth in proactive climate actions worldwide. The impact on the more vulnerable developing countries was also discussed and why urgent action is needed against the climate crisis.
It was all about engaging and encouraging participants to take action. “My favourite moment of the day was when we got to connect with each other, talk in groups and share ideas,” shared Leornard when highlighting the ice breaker sessions they introduced at the start of the day, with each of the 5 break-out groups tackling a problem affecting their communities and devising solutions.
The speakers included:
📢 Kaje Rodrigue - CEO, Rwanda Youth Biodiversity Network
📢 Emelyne Janvière UWIMANA - APAC Youth delegate & Volunteer at Young Volunteers for the Environment (YVE)
📢 RUBANGURA Sadiki Daddy - CEO, Rwanda Environmental Journalist
📢 Leonard IYAMUREMYE - Founder, We4climate Rwanda
📢 Olivier Ishimwe - Communications Officer, The Green Protector
